Wire-O® Binding

Wire-O® Binding

Wire-O Binding SamplesHave you ever attempted to study a workbook that refused to lay flat? Or fought with a cookbook that kept changing pages, right when you were elbow deep in flour? This is why Wire-O®, sometimes referred to as twin loop, is the perfect binding solution when readers must interact with the content beyond simply reading it. Your printed piece can open to a single page with ease and can lay flat for convenience, simply by choosing the best custom packaging solution to bind your product.

Wire-O Binding Benefits:

  • Versatile: bound projects can lay flat, or fold into a single page without closing
  • Full Bleed: 360 degree page rotation allow for full bleed printing
  • Durability: More durable than similar coil, or spiral binding
  • Capacity: Can secure 1.25 inches of paper, up to 350 pages, depending on paper stock
  • Colors: Available in a wide variety of colors
  • Key Products: ideal for calendars, journals, workbooks, cookbooks and manuals

Wire-O® bound is sometimes mistaken as spiral bound, or coil bound. Spiral and coil bound are actually a single continuous loop that is threaded through the holes punched in the spine of the booklet. Spiral binding is a popular method for notebooks.

One benefit of Wire-O® is that it provides durability and has a polished, professional look. The wires start in a “C” form and are tightened into the holes of the document, securing up to 1.25 inches of paper. Depending on the thickness of paper stock you select, your Wire-O® project can have 4 to 350 pages. Wire-O is available in a large selection of colors to accent your design. The end result is a round-edge wire closure that is both sturdy and attractive.

In addition, Wire-O® binding secures the pages in perfect registration, meaning they are aligned edge to edge when opened. This unique product packaging provides an optimal solution for books that require overlays including diagrams, floor plans, info-graphics, and site layouts. Since the pages lay out flat, side-by-side, double-page spreads, or crossovers, can be incorporated, combining the two pages full dimensions. Some examples of this application would be plat maps, flow charts, large graphics, or drawings.

Front and back cover for Wire-O® bound materials can be either the same stock as the main pages, or a heavier cover stock that acts as a protective barrier for the book.

We offer custom combinations to meet any need you may have. We can even do specialty work if you want your cover to have a die cut or maybe an embossed title to add extra pizazz. Multiple sizing options are available. We can also incorporate variable data printing, which means that if you want a specific image or personalized text on each booklet, we can accommodate you.

We offer tabbed papers if you need to divide your book into sections that are easily accessed. For example, if you are printing a Wire-O® cookbook, you can tab “Appetizers, Main Entrée’s, and Desserts” to improve the functionality of your piece.

Low-cost graphic design programs

Designing your own marketing materials with low-cost graphic design programs

Things have gotten a lot easier for businesses looking to design their own marketing materials. Gone are the days when Adobe’s Photoshop and InDesign were the only real options for creating professional looking promotional materials. A Google search will find plenty of free or low-cost graphic design programs that can help you craft the perfect logo or brochure.

It all sounds easy enough: your marketing budget can’t take the pressure of hiring a graphic designer, so all you have to do is download a program and spend a night putting something together that you can send to your printer tomorrow. But, while the abundance of online resources does make things easier, the process isn’t quite as effortless as you might think.

The fact is, it’s a world of plenty out there when it comes to the do-it-yourself approach to designing marketing materials. The real challenge is finding the right application for your needs. And in many cases, you may need to utilize more than one program. The key is to choose wisely. You don’t want to sink several hours into learning the ins and outs of an application only to discover it doesn’t fully meet your needs.

How do you choose wisely? Doing a bit of prep work prior to diving in will save you time and effort in the long run.

First, develop a set of preliminary questions that provide the groundwork for evaluating the software that’s out there.

What Marketing Materials Will You Create?

Before exploring software options, you need to know what types of promotional materials you want to create. You are building a toolkit of software solutions and no toolbox has just one tool. You will use different solutions depending on your marketing needs.

Most of the material you will be designing will likely require the same program—something that provides you with layout or template options, for example—but others might need you to learn the ropes of a completely different application.

For example, if your first project is to design a logo for your business that you’ll be able to use both online and in your print materials, you may want to use a vector graphics editor like DrawPlus, or you might want to try one of the many online logo creators, such as the free Canva.

Will You Create Your Own Design or Use Something Else?

If you’ll need to create your own images to use in your marketing materials, you’ll have to add more tools to your graphic design toolkit. For example, if you’ll be creating your own images rather than relying on stock photos, you may want to check out image creating programs like Inkscape, a vector graphics creator and editor that’s a free alternative to Adobe Illustrator. And if you already have images that need to be edited, Pixlr is an image and photo editor that comes in both Web-based and desktop versions.

Other applications which might find their way into your toolkit? If you’ll be working with images, you’ll probably put a color tool like Adobe Color CC to good use occasionally. And maybe you’re planning on adding an interactive element to your print materials by using Quick Response (QR) codes. In that case, a QR code generator such as Kaywa QR Code or GOQR.me will come in handy.

Where Will You Work?

This question may seem a bit strange until you consider the range of devices available to most of us these days. Chances are, you’ll be working on your desktop or your laptop, but if you’re an aficionado of the iPad Pro, for example, or like to take advantage of the mobility offered by your smartphone, you might prefer to have a selection of mobile apps at hand as well, preferably ones which sync to the cloud so you can continue working when you get back to the office.

For example, the app Word Swag, available for both iOS and Android, lets you transform your images by adding text to them. While it’s a tool you’d use predominantly for creating images for social media sharing, it may also come in handy when you’re in need of graphics for print promotional materials. Or if you’d like to be able to do some photo and image editing while you’re out and about, Pixlr, mentioned above, also offers Android and iOS versions.

Even if you plan to work entirely on your desktop computer or your laptop, unless you’re opting for a web-based application, you’ll also have to take into account your platform. While many programs are cross-platform, you’ll also find an assortment of programs which are only available for one platform. So the fact that you’ll be working on a Mac or Windows computer may make a difference in the options available to you. For example, the free image and photo editing program Paint.net is available only for Windows, while the relatively low-cost image editor Pixelmator is available only for Mac.

Web-based vs. Desktop: What’s Your Preference?

Graphic design programs come in two flavors today: web-based and desktop. In the first category are applications you access from within your browser. One key advantage of using web-based applications? You’re not platform dependent, so if you have a Mac at work but use a Windows computer at home, you can easily go back and forth between the two environments. And whether you save your work to the cloud, or to a portable storage device, using an online program means you don’t have to worry about having specific software installed on all the computers and laptops you are using.

In addition to Pixlr, Canva and PicMonkey are examples of Web-based graphic design programs.

A desktop program, however, often has the advantage of being more fully-featured. While Adobe’s Photoshop and InDesign come to mind, there are other, low-cost or free, alternatives available which offer an in-depth set of features. The open source, cross-platform program Gimp, for example, is a great free alternative to Photoshop that provides the user with much the same feature set as Photoshop; it comes with a large library of plugins as well, so you can pretty much create any type of effect you desire.

How to Choose Graphic Design Programs

Once you’ve gone over these preliminary questions, you’ll have a better idea of the type of program that will be the most appropriate for your particular purposes. When you dive into your Google search results, though, you’ll find yourself faced with quite a few applications that might be suitable. Evaluate the potential ones by considering the following factors, and you should be well on your way to choosing the best programs for your needs.

Ease of Use

Let’s face it: you’re tackling the design of your own promotional materials because your marketing budget just can’t be squeezed any further to hire a professional designer. But you also need to factor your time into the equation. The cost-saving advantages of doing it yourself may be greatly reduced if you find yourself spending more time than you anticipated to come up with a professional looking result.

A program that has the ability to handle everything you throw at it, such as the full featured Gimp mentioned above, will likely also present you with a steep learning curve. An application like Canva, on the other hand, while not offering you quite as many features, has been designed to be extremely easy to use.

Availability of Tutorials

Even with an easy-to-use application, you may occasionally need to learn how to do something in order to achieve a certain effect or result. A graphic design program with a number of tutorials available will prove helpful if you do run into a design issue down the road. Take some time to see if tutorials are available for the application you’re considering—and make sure to check the quality of the tutorials as well. A tutorial that’s difficult to follow might be even worse than no tutorial at all.

Your Marketing Budget

While a number of good, free graphic design applications exist, many of them also offer a “premium” option. Some programs may also have low-cost templates which can reduce the time you spend on laying out your particular project. If you’d like to work with a template but can’t find a suitable one, you also might be able to purchase one from a designer who’s experienced with working with the particular program you’re contemplating using.

If your marketing budget has enough room for you to take advantage of some of these premium options or to purchase a customizable template, it’s worth the time to check out what you can get for your money. In many cases, you may be able to reduce the time you’ll end up spending on a design project because the program you’re using offers you the elements you need at a price your budget can absorb.

Long Term Support

Good graphic design programs, both free and low-cost, will come and go. The ones mentioned in this article are currently among the most popular, but a few years down the road, some of them might not even be around. It is very unlikely that established, popular software like Photoshop will go belly-up any time soon. If you need ongoing support or just want the security of knowing the application you like will always be around, maybe low-cost or free solutions aren’t a good idea for you.

If you find yourself facing the prospect of creating your own print marketing materials, and your marketing budget is placing restraints on the tools you can utilize, a careful evaluation of your own needs and the features offered by the current free and low-cost tools available online will guide you in choosing the right tool for your specific purposes.

Thick Business Cards

Extra Thick Business Cards

thick business cards

A lot of business cards look cool, but how do they feel? Does your business card feel like a winner? With Printing for Less’s 24pt thick business cards, your card will stand out from the deck at any trade show or event.

Almost twice as thick as a traditional business card, the extra thick card stock not only gives your business cards that premium, high end presentation; they literally feel different and stand out in a pile of standard cards.

Quality in Strength

Today’s busy professional is constantly on the move, and damaged crumpled business cards are one of the first casualties of frequent travel. With extremely durable 24pt heavy card stock, your thick business cards will last longer; maintaining their shape without easily crumpling or folding. This sturdy quality gives your company an automatic air of quality, as it stands strong amongst the tattered and dog-eared cards of your competition. Depending on your desired look and feel, thick 24pt business cards are available with a Gloss or Dull/Matte finish.

Custom Options

Looking to jazz up your thick business cards even more? Consider adding rounded corners to your card, or even a custom die cut shape for added pizazz. The only thing more remarkable than an extra thick business card, is a thick business card with custom effects like die cutting, foil stamping, or soft touch coating or UV coating. Consider saving money with one of Printing for Less’s snazzy standing die shapes, ready and waiting to trim your card into a distinctive visual masterpiece.

More Than Just Business Cards

Want to get other products on 24pt cover stock as well? No problem! Extra thick paper is an ideal upgrade for products like hang tags, door hangers, and many more. Any print piece you want to be stronger, last longer, and have a premium presentation is a perfect fit for thick 24pt paper stock. For example, printed rack cards stand stiffer and stronger in their display racks with this extra thick paper stock. Printed door hangers will last longer against the elements and hug doorknobs tighter with extra thick 24pt paper. Letterhead Design and Printing

Designing Letterhead for Lasting Impact

Even in our digital age, companies still rely on printed letterhead for professional communications. Contracts, client or fundraising letters, internal memos and other company documentation still make their best impression on commercially-printed letterhead, especially with matching envelopes.

Letterhead Design Tips

Your letterhead reflects your organization’s image, personality and quality. Express who you are on paper through the different design elements on your letterhead or your letterhead and envelope sets. Keeping the look and feel consistent with your other marketing materials is also important for reinforcing a professional identity. Follow these tips to dress up your letters:
letterhead designs

  • Overall design: How do you want to come across? Solid and steady, quirky and creative, or stylish and sophisticated? A simple design with your logo and contact info may be appropriate for the type of business you have, or you may need a stronger dose of graphics to create the right image.
  • Letterhead Content: Baseline is your company name, address, phone numbers and email address. Also include your logo, company website and slogan, if you have them, on your personal or corporate letterhead. Be creative on where you put the info, you’re not limited to the top of the page!
  • Fonts: What fonts or typestyles best reflect your business? Fonts can be formal or fun, classy or cool – try a few and see what fits with your logo and your style. Or, use what you already have on your other marketing materials. Make sure the fonts you use are readable and not too small – generally stay between 9 pt. and 12 pt.
  • Color: If your company logo is usually black and white, printing your letterhead in black ink only may suit your image just fine. Otherwise, use color to grab attention and reinforce your brand identity. Even the background can include some color, if it’s light enough for the text of your letter to be read whether printed or handwritten.

And don’t forget companion printed envelopes to make a great impression! You’ll generally want to keep your return address at the top left for postal use, but you can be just as creative as on the letterhead in look and feel with fonts and colors on your envelopes. Designing and printing your letterhead and envelopes in tandem creates a unified brand image for best impact.

How do you look on paper?

A great design is only one half of the blueprint for sensational stationery printing. The paper you choose for your letterhead printing is just as important. Look for the following characteristics:

  • Finish: Smooth or textured, you’ll want a quality uncoated stock that you can run through your laser or desktop printer without smudging. Smooth stocks show off your color designs the best and are less expensive and more commonly available and cost effective, while textured stocks such as linen or laid offer a nice tactile, high-end feel. If you want to match your letterhead more closely to your business cards or brochures printed on glossy or dull/matte coated stocks, go for smooth stock.
  • Weight: Don’t settle for less than premium-weight paper for your letterhead and envelopes – the standard bond paper most offices use for copying and printing won’t give you the sense of quality you want to convey in your official letters. Look for 70 lb text or 24 lb bond. You can feel the difference!
  • Color: While plenty of options are out there for colored paper, you can get the same effect by using a colored background in your design that’s printed on often less-expensive white paper. Be aware that ink prints differently on colored paper than on white, so determine what you’re trying to achieve before deciding on a colored stock for your letterhead.
  • Sustainability: You don’t have to sacrifice quality for environmental responsibility. Choose environmentally responsible papers, or ask about fine writing papers that include recycled content.

Work with your designer or favorite graphic design software to put your ideas in motion and create unique letterhead printing that beautifully shows off your business for just pennies a piece.
