Printing Methods & Materials

Using Embossing on Brochures

Using Embossing on Brochures

Embossing gives brochures an interesting texture that just begs to be touched.

Embossing uses a pair of dies to create a raised image on paper. The male, or bas relief, die presses up, while the female, mold shaped, die presses down. The resulting image pops out on one side and has an interesting recessed (or debossed) look on the other.

Embossing has long been used for raised seals on official documents, and it can give brochures that same elegant and timeless look. But embossing also looks great with bold text and modern graphics. Embossing can be used alone (known as “blind embossing”), or it can be combined with foil stamping or specialty inks to create a 3-D effect that seems to lift text and images right off your paper.

Planning Your Embossed Brochure

Because embossing leaves a pattern on both sides of the paper, it can do double duty in your brochure design. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The reverse side of embossing is indented, and text and images won’t print well there. Design your brochure so you can leave the debossed area blank without it looking awkward.
  • Embossing works best on thicker paper stock
  • Embossing can create a high level of detail on some papers, while other papers will produce a bolder, deeper image.

Get the Most out of Embossed Brochures

Brochures are a popular way to describe products, businesses, and services brochures are also great for presentation handouts, menus, maps and resumes.

Because brochures have plenty of space, they’re a good choice for detailed product information, your company story, or a glossy photo spread. Take advantage of the extra space, but keep the look clean and easy to read. Give your readers enough information to spark their interest, but don’t overwhelm them with too much detail.

Give your brochure a strong call to action that clearly tells readers what you want them to do next. Whether it’s call to order!,visit our website to learn more or please RSVP, place embossing near the call to action to help draw attention to it and encourage your readers to act.

If you’ll be mailing your brochure, put the embossing on the front or back of the folded piece. The raised texture will instantly stand out in your recipients’ hands, inviting them to look inside.

Use embossing in combination with die cutting to create a three dimensional image at the top or front flap of your brochure. People love to interact with shapes and textures, and embossing combined with die cutting helps ensure your brochure will be read, saved and shared.

Use embossing to project an elegant, upscale image.

  • Embossing says “quality” on brochures for high-end products and professional services.
  • Embossing makes invitations to fundraisers and other events feel special.
  • Combine embossing with foil stamping to give your graphics an irresistible 3D effect.

Embossing makes ordinary brochures upscale and touchable. When combined with other techniques such as foil stamping or die cutting, embossing creates a memorable brochure that people can’t wait to get their hands on.

Premium Paper

Premium Paper

“Anyway you want it, that’s the way you need it, anyway you want it….”! Classic song, powerful message. Printing for Less is all about giving you what you want (premium papers) the way you want it (fast & budget-friendly).

Premium paper is sometimes referred to as designer paper, fancy paper, or specialty paper. Regardless of what you call these quality papers, Printing for Less is ready to help you decide which paper best suits your personal printing project. Call 800-924-2041 now and talk to one of our friendly print experts for a personalized quote or samples!

Premium Paper Benefits

  • Provides luxurious textures
  • Compliments design, lending personality to a printed piece
  • Allows for double sided printing that does not show through
  • Facilitates outstanding print performance
  • Enhances tactile interest
  • Expands options, choose from crisp and conservative, to rugged and edgy

Paper 101:

Ask almost anyone where paper comes from and they will tell you, trees. And they would be correct, in most instances. However, many premium papers are manufactured from linen, cotton and other raw plant fibers. Some paper is even made of synthetic materials like polyolefin, often used when waterproofing is needed, like divers maps. Designer paper can meet an array of needs that standard paper cannot. Paper comes from three primary resources:

  1. Sawmill chips and scraps that are the by-product in the lumber production process.
  2. Small trees that are harvested from tree farms for the sole purpose of making paper.
  3. Recycled paper. Many papers are able to be recycled up to seven times before the fibers become too small to re-purpose.

The fibers of diverse tree species vary in strength and length. For example, pine and spruce trees are perfect for manufacturing strong papers, like shipping containers. The drawback is they are not smooth, making them a poor choice for printing.

Oak and maple trees have shorter, weaker fibers, yet produce a much smoother surface more conducive to printing and writing. Most papers today are a carefully selected combination of wood fibers to achieve the desired brightness, strength, and tactile experience. Many papers are coated with fine clay that improves the surface with a slight gloss.

Paper is a sustainable resource. Currently, over 50% of paper manufactured in the U.S. each year is recovered from the wood waste of lumber production. Still more is recovered from properly recycled consumer paper waste. Many papers are made from 100% Post-Consumer Waste, meaning fully recycled. At Printing for Less, we firmly believe in taking responsibility for good environmental stewardship. We offer many premium papers that are made from 100% PCW.

Fun Fact: Did you know wasps make paper? They chew wood to make a fiber paste that they spread thin, creating their nest.

Printing for Less Premium Printing Papers: Your BEST Value

Printing for Less understands that you need the very best options available at fair prices. While designer paper stocks add sophistication and tactile interest to professional print pieces, they can also add to the cost of the printing project. Printing for Less keeps a line of premium papers in-house to lower turnaround times and cost, while maintaining the highest quality standards in the industry.

Our premium papers are comparable to branded designer paper stocks you may be familiar with. We are happy to mail you a sample of our in-house premium paper stocks so you can feel the texture and structure of the papers for yourself.

Soft Touch Coating for Printing

Soft Touch® Coating

Soft Touch® is a departure from the ordinary. It is a coating that, when applied, creates a velvety texture. The paper becomes “soft” to the touch and increases the tactile appeal. Soft Touch® coating creates a softer look and feel on printed materials, while creating a barrier which is fingerprint resistant. Darker color palettes will appear more muted and sophisticated when Soft Touch® is applied. To minimize the flattening of images, it is best applied over high gloss paper stock. Soft Touch® coating is applied in-line as a part of the printing process and assists with a quick drying time. This coating also protects the sheet from scuff marks during finishing operations like binding, folding, or cutting. A similar effect can be achieved by laying matte film lamination over the printed surface, however this process is more costly and time consuming than Soft Touch®, and adds excessive weight and thickness to the piece, making lamination less suitable for mailings.

Soft Touch® dries fast, is non-yellowing, and is eco-friendly. Luxurious and sophisticated are words often used to describe the effect Soft Touch® coating produces. This tactile sensation increases the engagement with your prospect or customer.

Sometimes referred to as soft feel, liquid velvet, or gentle touch, by various manufacturers, Soft Touch® coating provides an attractive and practical option that results in a svelte presentation. Almost any printed product can benefit from this coating. Create silky business cards, satin feel brochures, and velvety postcards and catalogs. You name it, we can do it. Call 800-924-2041 to consult with one of our printing experts.

You can instantly order amazing business cards, brochures, catalogs, postcards, and many other products with Soft Touch® coating. Incorporate Soft Touch® coating on your finished product to add a touch of class.

UV Coating for Printing

UV Coating: High Gloss Print Coating Explained

Your printed marketing materials may be your best opportunity to get your customer’s attention in today’s increasingly competitive arena. Why not make them really shine, and catch their attention? You may want to check out the advantages and benefits of UV coating.

What is UV or Ultra Violet Coating?

UV coating, or ultraviolet coating, is a very glossy, shiny liquid coating applied to a printed paper surface and cured on a printing press or special machine using ultraviolet light. The coating hardens, or cures when it is exposed to the ultra violet radiation.

UV coating makes your printed piece eye catching, and is perfect for products such as postcards, hand-out sheets, presentation folders, business cards and catalogs, or any product that can benefit from a rich, glossy and dramatic look. Our high-gloss flood UV coating can even be applied to synthetic paper like SmartFlex®!

What are the Benefits of UV Coatings?

Ultraviolet coating has several advantages over other coating methods. They include:
  • Very high shine finish

    • When UV is used on deep, rich colors, like blues and rich blacks, the result is an almost wet appearance. This can be highly effective with image-rich projects, like product catalogs or photography brochures. The stunning shine it creates is why it is so popular for certain designs and products.

  • Good abrasion resistance

    • If your printed piece is going to be handed out or travel through the mail, the combination of a visually appealing piece and durability makes UV coating a great effect for postcards, brochures or business cards. The UV coating allows the mailed piece to resist smudging and marking and allows it to maintain a professional, high quality appearance due to an extremely hard finish, one known for being both chemical and abrasion resistant

  • High clarity

    • UV coatings make details pop and stand out and are perfect for photographic images and company logos. Check out our free sample pack to see for yourself the impact this coating makes to photos.

  • Environmentally friendly

    • UV coatings are free of solvents and do not emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs when cured.

    • Paper with UV coatings can be recycled with all of your other paper.

  • Instantaneous drying time with UV light exposure

    • By drying so quickly, the use of UV coating helps reduce production time, enabling earlier shipping and delivery times.

Cons: When is UV Coating Not the Best Option?

While UV coating works great for a wide variety of printed pieces, there are several instances where UV coating is not a good fit.
  • When using Metallic Inks
  • On text weight paper under 100#
  • When the piece has Foil Stamping
  • Anything that needs to be written on
  • The addressed portion of a mailing piece

More Ways to Make You Shine

Coatings allow you to really make your printed piece stand out. Depending on what kind of result you want to achieve, coatings work to enhance the desired outcome. Use UV coating to make those rich, full color photos stand out, allow your strong graphical elements to pop, and really showcase your products.

Spot UV coating is another great way to add dimension, it is utilized by only applying UV coating to certain locations on your piece. This effect highlights certain spots and draws the eye so you can direct the reader’s attention.

Soft Touch® coating is a great option when you want to add a velvety, matte look and feel to your piece. Its tactile appeal makes it a perfect option for postcards, brochures, business cards and hangs tags. Words cannot describe how luxurious this coating feels. Use the button below to request samples to see and feel the difference between all of our coating options.

Coating for Printing

Print Coatings – Spot Varnish, UV Coating

Don’t Let Your Paper Go Naked… Give it a Coating

Why are coatings used on printing?

Print coatings can help your printed products stand out by making them more durable, more elegant or by bringing the reader’s attention to the right spot. Let’s face it, print is an investment of your marketing budget that needs to generate some return. Scuffed and torn mail or smeared fingerprints don’t let you put your best look in front of customers, so protect your investment with the right coating.

Types of print coating

Varnish

Varnish is basically clear ink and can be gloss, satin or matte. A flood varnish covers the entire printed page for protection or sheen. A spot varnish allows you to highlight specific areas of a printed piece and adds shine and depth to specific elements on the page such as a logo or image. Varnishes are also applied on-press, but they are heavier-bodied and can be applied (like inks) to only certain areas (spot varnish). A press plate must be created to apply a spot varnish, so artwork that clearly defines where to apply it is necessary.

UV Coating

UV coatings are cured by exposure to ultraviolet light to quickly dry and harden the coating. UV coatings provide the highest gloss finish versus other coatings but may crack when scored or folded due to the thickness and hardness of the coating. Some find it too shiny for some uses, but it really makes photographs jump off of the page. UV coatings can be applied as a flood (covering the entire printed sheet) or as a spot coating and can be applied on or off press. Spot UV coating can be a great way to bring the reader’s eye first to your logo, or to your special offer. UV compatible inks must be used on sheets that will be UV coated. UV coated sheets can not be foil stamped and embossing should be done after the coating.

Soft Touch® Coating

This coating creates a velvety texture that exudes elegance. The paper becomes “soft” to the touch and increases the tactile appeal. It creates a softer look and feel on printed materials, while creating a barrier which is fingerprint resistant. It dries fast, is non-yellowing, and is eco-friendly. Luxurious and sophisticated are words often used to describe the effect Soft Touch® coating produces.

When should a print coating be used?

In most instances a coating will help protect and enhance your final printed product. They are a must for any piece being mailed, or recommended for any product printed on coated paper that will get handled, such as business cards, brochures, bookmarks, rack cards, catalogs or presentation folders. Your printer can help you decide what type of coating is right for your project.

When should a print coating not be used?

There are certain times when you do want your paper to go naked. It may be difficult to write on coated paper, especially if it has a glossy coating. If you are ordering greeting or note cards and intend to write inscriptions on the inside make sure to specify no coating on the inside of the card. The same goes for the address side of postcards or other mailing panels unless your printer or mailing house assures you they can print addresses on coated paper (as Printing for Less does). If in doubt ask for some samples and run them through your printer or try writing on them.

We are happy to answer any questions you have on print coatings and provide samples of coated and uncoated paper with the different coatings we offer. Call 800-924-2041 now!
