Custom Printing Solutions

Perfect Binding

Perfect Binding

Your favorite magazine, that paper-back mystery novel, or the holiday catalog in your mail box are all samples of perfect binding. Rather than relying on a saddle stitch, perfect binding uses a strong adhesive to bind the pages together. It’s a durable, low to medium cost packaging solution for publications that need to be thicker than a saddle stitch can accommodate. Perfect binding, sometimes referred to as edge binding, also offers a more sophisticated, commercial looking product.

When deciding if perfect binding is the right solution for your catalog or magazine, consider the outcome you are aiming for. If your project is less than 40 pages (80 front and back), then perfect binding is not your best option. However, for any print job that exceeds this volume, perfect binding is, well, perfect.

Whether it’s a catalog, magazine, business publication, manual, or book, we can help you achieve a professional, commercial product.

We understand that a printing project of this magnitude can be intimidating. Our friendly experts are available to help you through the process.

Here is how to get started:

    • Determine the scope of your perfect binding project
  • How many pages will you need?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • How will the final piece be distributed?
  • Do you need to consult with Printing for Less to develop a targeted mailing list?
    • Design and Layout
  • Develop the layout.
  • Have a designer create the artwork and files.
  • Contact us for help with design if you don’t have a knowledgeable designer available.
    • Go to Print
  • Determine how many pieces you require.
  • Consult with one of our printing experts.
  • Place Order.
  • Deliver design files to PrintingForLess.com.
  • Get a physical proof, approve or make corrections.
  • Jump for joy, you have the perfect bound product you envisioned!

The perfect bound magazine and book below are examples of the professional binding you can expect from us. We are dedicated to producing the best in commercial custom printing for your business.

Catalog and Booklet Printing Specifications and Formats

Catalog and Booklet Printing Specifications and Formats

Understanding Catalog Page Counts and Formats

Catalog Design ExamplesTo count catalog pages, count sequentially the way you would count pages in a book or magazine, but include the front and back outside and inside covers. Count the front cover as page 1, the inside left cover as page 2, and so on.

Make sure the total amount of pages in your catalog is a multiple of four. By definition, a catalog or booklet is a folded piece with one or more sheets that consist of four pages or panels each.

To see how this works, if you take apart a saddle-stitched catalog by removing the staples at the spine, you will see that the catalog is composed of this set of sheets (also called “spreads”) collated and folded together. Each one of these two-sided spreads has four separate pages (two per side).

If you had a catalog made up of four two-sided spreads, for example, the total page count would be 16 pages.

The catalog or booklet pages are arranged or imposed for press by the printer so that when the pages are trimmed and folded, the pages land in the correct reading order.
  • Our standard 8.5″ x 11″ catalog is folded down from an 11″ x 17″ flat, trimmed size*
  • Our half-size 5.5″ x 8.5″ catalog is folded down from an 8.5″ x 11″ flat, trimmed size*
These trimmed flat sheets or “spreads” may be grouped together to fill the larger paper size on press, especially for the half size catalogs.
*NOTE: these flat sizes are for catalogs folded and bound on the long edge. Please contact us for information and pricing for 8.5 x 11 catalogs bound on the short edge.

Catalog Page Layout Instructions

We’ve made a quick video that illustrates how the page layout in a catalog looks. Most people are confused with how to number the covers of the book. The big takeaway is: submitting your file as individual pages is all we need to make your catalog or booklet look perfect.

Catalog Layout Specifications

While some printers may require that you provide your layout in these arranged “printer spreads,” you can keep it simple with us! Just submit your artwork as individual pages in your design program at the folded dimension, or 2-pages at the flat dimension above also known as “readers spreads” for more integrated designs (two pages that are side-by-side when the catalog is open). We’ll take it from there during our prepress process and work with you to ensure your proof is in the reading order that you intended.

Include bleed and the safe design zone on your page designs on all outside edges or we’re happy to add it for you as part of our printing service.

File Review for Peace of Mind

If you are not sure how well your file will work for commercial printing, we encourage you to get a free file review and we will check it for you! In addition to checking page formatting for catalog printing, we check your files for about 50 different issues and how each will affect the quality of your print job, including bleeds, image resolution, color mode conversions (RGB to CMYK) and much more.

Catalog Mailing Specifications

Cut your postage costs by choosing our 5.5 x 8.5 size catalog, which mails at letter rate in most cases. Be sure to leave space on the back for mailing and return address info and postal service bar codes. See our catalog mailing layout guides or call us for assistance.

We can mail your catalogs directly to your customers and prospects and provide targeted mailing lists. See our Mailing Services Guide page for details on how we can save you time and money on your direct mail catalog, or call us with any questions on your mailing needs.

Business Cards with Pantone Inks and Spot UV

Business Cards with Pantone Inks and Spot UV

spot uv business cardPantone inks ensure that business cards perfectly reflect your brand. Spot UV gives cards dazzling effects that you can’t get with ordinary printing processes.

Spot UV isn’t really “ink” at all. It’s a special glossy varnish that’s applied to business cards and instantly cured with ultraviolet light. The result is a shimmering glow that will make people wonder where you got such cool cards.

Pantone inks are based on the Pantone color system (also known as the Pantone Matching System or PMS), which provides color consistency across everything your company does through multiple vendors. When you choose spot Pantone inks, you guarantee that the blue on your business card is the same as the blue on your signs and product packaging, making your brand recognizable by its color alone.

Design Tips for Business Cards with Pantone and Spot UV

Pantone and spot UV add inviting accents to four color printing projects. For the best look:

business card using spot uv
  • Use matte paper to emphasize the shine of spot UV. For maximum shimmer, we recommend “silk spot UV” — coating the paper with a soft touch coating before adding UV coating.
  • Keep your business cards uncluttered and make it easy for people to read your contact information. Use at least 8pt type and pick a typeface that’s professional, clear and readable. Save the swirly scripts and comic sans for another use.
  • Refer to your company’s style guidelines when using Pantone inks to ensure you specify the right colors for your brand.

Using Pantone and Spot UV Business Cards

These days, almost everyone can instantly enter contact information in their phones. But business cards still serve an important function. They give people a physical reminder that they met you. When you hand someone a business card, you keep the focus on your conversation, not on technology. And business cards keep working for you, even when there’s no internet.

Keep a stack of business cards with you everywhere you go. Be sure they include your most important contact information:

  • Put your name, company name, and job title in a prominent spot
  • Include your direct phone number and email address
  • Also add your company’s website address
  • Optional information includes your street address, social networking URLs and a QR code that connects to your company website. Include these items only if they seem useful and important to the people you meet.

Your overall business card design should be consistent with your brand and the way you want people to view your company. Spot Pantone colors make it easy to maintain brand consistency, but business cards can also suggest your brand in more subtle ways. Thicker paper says “quality,” while die cuts can make you seem creative and fun.

spot uv backSpot UV gives business cards a truly striking look. Use a spot UV finish on the back of the card to transform it into a conversation-worthy piece. Or put spot UV over your company name or logo. Use spot UV to simulate water and other shiny surfaces, or to show that your tech company really is cutting-edge.

Having trouble picking colors? Every year, Pantone names a color of the year and suggests other shades that pair well with it. Use spot Pantone color in this year’s hue to create a business card that’s perfectly on trend.

Spot UV gives business cards an arresting effect, while spot Pantone inks create colorful perfection. Either will give you the kind of business cards that you can’t wait to share.

Foil Stamped Brochures

Foil Stamped Brochures

Foil stamping makes an ordinary brochure shiny and irresistible.

Foil stamping is a special printing process that uses a heated die to press pigment or a thin metallic film onto a sheet of paper. It’s often combined with embossing to make words, logos and graphics literally jump out from the page.

You can use different types of foil stamping for different effects:

  • Add some shiny bling by using metallic foils in colors like silver, gold, green, blue and orange.
  • Make a bold statement with gloss pigment foils – you choose the color.
  • Go for elegance with deep colored matte pigment foils.
  • Be unique with special texture foils like marble, wood grain, leather or pearl.
  • Go high tech with a holographic image transferred onto a special foil.

Planning Your Foil Stamped Brochure

Foil stamping is most effective as an accent to make one part of a brochure stand out. It needs the right paper, placement and color to look its best.

  • Foil stamping works best on smooth, thicker paper stock. For best results, make sure your brochure is at least 80#, and stay away from textures like linen that can keep the foil edges from looking crisp.
  • Foil stamping can be used on folded brochures, but it can’t go across a fold. Make sure your foiled words or design won’t end up in a crease.
  • Because foil stamping is opaque, you can use a light colored foil over a darker background. As with all printing, your foil will stand out better if there is a strong contrast between the foil and the background.

Get the Most out of Foil Stamped Brochures

Brochures are a staple of trade shows and tourist attractions, but they’re also great for a host of other uses, including menus, coupons, event invitations, maps and even resumes.

To promote your brand identity, choose brochure colors and textures that are consistent with your values and the way you want people to view you or your company. Bright gloss foil stamped colors say “fun” on a cupcake shop menu, while silver and gold imply wealth and trust on a financial planner’s brochure.

Because brochures have more space than print ads or postcards, they’re a popular option for describing a business or product. Focus on the benefit to customers and give them enough information to keep them interested – but not so much that they’re overwhelmed.

Brochures should have a call to action that tells people what you want them to do next. Foil helps your call to action stand out. For example:

  • Put your phone number, email or web address in foil.
  • Include a map with a foil star showing your location.
  • Use foil on social media icons.

If your brochure will be on a brochure rack, put the foil stamping on the front of the brochure, near the top, where it’s easy to see from a distance. Use bright, shiny colors so visitors can’t help but take a second look.

If you’re mailing your brochure, use foil on the front and back to make it stand out from other mail.

If customers will bring your brochure home and save it for future reference, use bold foil accents to attract their eyes from across a room or inside a drawer. Your potential customers may have a stack of takeout menus or trade show brochures – foil can ensure that yours is the one that gets a second look.

Foil stamping gives brochures a fresh look that attracts attention. Highlight the action you want people to take and a simple brochure can have a big impact.
