Professional Printing Tips and Resources

Professional Printing Tips and Resources

Business printing is a lot like preparing for an important presentation. You want to show that you put enough thought and care into how you present yourself and your company. Here are some tips and resources for professional printing to help instill confidence in your clients and business prospects.

Bare Bones for Business Printing

Looking “professional” in print takes more than just a decent design and well-written copy. If you want professional-quality marketing materials, there is no substitute for true 4-color process printing. Offset commercial business printing gives you the best quality and value for the buck.

But don’t be fooled into thinking any local or online printer will produce the type of quality that says “credibility.” More is involved in professional business printing than simply putting ink on paper.

Your printer should work with you and review your files to ensure your design will look as good as you expect, when you expect it. Choices such as paper stock, fonts and mailing guidelines can be critical in printing an effective marketing piece.

  • Thick, 12 or 14pt card stock for your business cards and 80# or higher text for brochures and catalogs give a substantial feel, with either a glossy or matte finish.
  • The right layout, fold and size can save you a bundle when preparing direct mail pieces. Talk to the pros on how to save on both printing and postage on your business printing and mailing.
  • Request samples of papers and printing. Ask about getting a hard proof or press proof if the color has to be right or you are printing a large order. Check the finish, texture and color to ensure it portrays the professional look and feel your business deserves.

A printer that stands behinds it’s work also guarantees it. Check your printer’s guarantee policy to understand how they deal with errors or returns. Find out more about how to choose the right business printing service.

Unique Business Printing Needs

  • If you’re a graphic designer, marketing agency or other print broker or reseller, professional printing is paramount to your business. Consider using a trade printer that offers high quality printing, trained experts and wholesale pricing.
  • For organizations with multiple offices, distributors or franchises, or for anyone looking for fast and easy business printing for your employees or associates, a web-to-print professional printing solution may be the best way to obtain quality printing that’s hassle-free.
  • For startups, professional printing can make the difference in showing you’re serious about your new business. Ask about special offers for establishing your business identity, such as business card and stationery packages.

Sustainable by Choice, Eco-Friendly by Design

Sustainable by Choice, Eco-Friendly by Design

green printing windpower

At Printing for Less, we are as passionate about the environment as we are about the quality of our products, services, and resources to drive our customers’ success. As a printing company, we choose to make responsible choices. We have built our business on sensible alternatives to help sustain our local and global environment. We are committed to preserving the clean environment and natural beauty in which we work and play every day.

Being a sustainable business was the obvious path for Printing for Less, and we have been using environmentally-sound printing from the beginning. We take our environmental actions seriously, ensuring they are designed to reduce, reuse, and recycle wherever and whenever possible. We believe it’s our duty to reduce our impact on the land with less energy consumption and less waste.

From our wind-powered print facility to our commitment to sourcing responsibly produced paper the goal is always maintaining our natural resources. There are several elements that contribute to green printing, and it goes far beyond just using recycled paper. At Printing for Less, sustainability is deeply rooted in the core of who we are as a business. To begin changing the way we print, we needed to first understand the importance of sustainability in our job and our lives.

Our Vision: The future is in our hands

Paper is a canvas for the imagination of marketers. If businesses intend to change the way they market, then it is time to use print solutions with a much smaller carbon footprint. We have looked at things differently since our founding in 1996, and don’t plan to ever change that.

Our Goal: Let’s change the way we print

Our goal is to allow more people to print beautiful pieces at an economic threshold that is not prohibitive for small businesses. Since our founding in 1996, we have looked at things differently and chose to add eco-friendly solutions.

Our Idea:
A concept worth trying

To produce something that is environmentally-friendly can be something as simple as the ink we use, or where the paper we used has been sourced. We’re creating a smarter, better world where everyone in marketing can succeed in the digital era and market your business in good conscience.

Minimizing Our Environmental Impact

Printing for Less respects the planet we live on, and we are proud of our standards and practices that make us an environmentally-responsible company. To change the way we print, Printing for Less has designed a series of solutions that help promote the use of sustainable methods for businesses – both in print and as a business.

Our day-to-day operations ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy our natural resources just as we have. Our scrap paper is recycled. Our business policies and procedures protect our environment. Items such as metal plates which are used on the press, through the cardboard boxes that our production materials arrive in, are all completely recycled.

Our ethical approach means that we take the environment into account at every stage, as we make sure our business operations reduce their negative impact on the environment. This is ensured by the strict standards of our partners, the environmental and chain of custody programs, and of ourselves as a business. Partnered with Veritiv, previously Unisource, is the leading independent marketer and distributor of commercial printing and business imaging papers, packaging systems and facility supplies and equipment in North America, has certified Printing for Less as a member of its Respect® network of printers. Gift Card Holders

Custom gift cards can be complimented with custom packaging as carriers and sleeves that further brand your company in the market place. We offer tip-on (glue-on) services. This places a small amount of easily removable, non-damaging glue to a base postcard that the gift card is attached to. We can also place the cards inside small gift card sleeves. Gift card holder packaging increases the presentation of, and engagement with your custom gift card.

In today’s competitive economy, consumers expect companies to provide a gift card option. The benefit of custom gift cards can be realized by even the smallest of businesses.

Benefits Include:

  • They increase your reach, allowing you to gain new customers that would not have come to you without receiving the gift card.
  • They build customer loyalty through convenience and service.
  • They are an excellent item to include in your direct mail pieces. A card with your $5.00 gift has more punch than a simple $5.00 off coupon.
  • They build organic word-of-mouth marketing channels.
  • They can be encoded for tracking and be used as loyalty cards.
  • They serve as a cost effective way to encourage ongoing visits to your store; on average 80% of the balance on each gift card will be redeemed. The majority of gift cards that are fully redeemed are done so with a purchase beyond the value of the card.
  • They provide an excellent way to communicate your message and brand.
  • They can be displayed at the register as an upsell item.

Foil Business Cards

Foil Business Cards

Make Your Printing Shine

foil business cards

Foil stamping is a versatile way to give your business card a high-end and customized look. Add a touch of class or sass on a foil stamped business card featuring effects such as elegant metallics, ultra-glossy colors, shimmery pearl or distinctive textured and high-tech effects.

Foil can help boost your business. Research has shown that people perceive your product as having a higher value and quality with the addition of effects like foil to your business card and other printed marketing materials.

Cards with foil printing, called hot foil stamping or hot stamping, use the impressing of pigment or metallic foil to paper using heated dies. The stamping machine applies the foil onto the surface under high pressure, leaving the die design on the paper. Business cards with foil often feature foil text or graphics, such as logos. Your foil business card will stand out from the crowd with its distinctive and eye-catching impressiveness, giving you the advantage in the highly competitive marketplace.

A three dimensional foil image can be created by combining foil with embossing. Check out our foil stamping video below to see a stamping press in operation, and see some additional visual samples on our custom printing effects page.

Foil Options

Foil stamped business cards can pop with a variety of foil types:

  • Metallic Foil has a metal-like shine and shimmer, and is available in a variety of colors, including gold, silver, red, green, blue and copper.
  • Gloss Pigment Foil has a high gloss, but non-metallic finish, with numerous colors available.
  • Matte Pigment Foil has a dull, non-shiny finish in deep solid colors.
  • Special Effect Foils such as leathers, marbles, pearls or woodgrains add interesting textures and appearances.
  • Holographic Foil uses a hologram on the surface. It creates a dramatic “high tech” effect.
uncoated foil business cards

What Materials can be Foil Stamped?

Foil can be used on almost any paper, including synthetic, plastic and magnet paper. Our smooth-surfaced gloss, dull/matte and lustre uncoated cover stocks are ideal for metallic foil or other foil stamped business card looks. Linen and other rough textured papers are generally not recommended for foil, since it will not look as smooth and crisp due to the paper’s uneven surface.

Designing Foil Stamped Business Cards

Foil stamping can really make a business card shine. To get the best results:

  • Make sure there is a high contrast between the foil stamping and your card’s background. Foil stamping is opaque, so you can use a light colored foil over a dark background – or vice versa.
  • Use at least 8pt type in a professional-looking font that’s easy to read at a glance.
  • Business cards are printed on a large sheet that’s then cut into individual cards. To accommodate any slight cutting variations, we recommend that your design incorporate a 3mm “bleed” on the edges. Don’t put any text along the edges, and avoid borders that could appear off-center when cut.
  • Need help with getting business card dimensions right? Check out our business card design specification guide!

Using Your Cards

Cell phones and email can’t replace the tangible quality of a business card. When you hand out business cards at a networking function, you keep the focus on your conversation – not on a piece of technology.silver foil business card

The key to a successful business card is simplicity. Include the main information needed to get in touch with you or learn more about your company, and leave plenty of blank space.

Business cards help you present a professional image, especially if you are a new entrepreneur, work for yourself, or are interacting with people who have never heard of your business. Foil stamping makes cards look custom and upscale, sending a message that your business is successful and values quality.

Foil stamped business cards attract attention, especially when metallic foil is combined with embossing. Take advantage of this by placing your business cards in places where they’ll be noticed. Leave stacks at local businesses, put them on community bulletin boards, or place them front and center at trade shows.

Foil stamping gives business cards an upscale look and an added punch that will help people remember you and your company. Use them to promote your business and send a message that everything you do is marked by quality.

Custom Printing with Metallic Ink

Custom Printing with Metallic Ink

Make Your Print Shine with Metallic Ink

If you are looking to make a big impression with your next print project, sometimes plain black or colored ink just won’t cut it. When you venture beyond the familiar territory of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, a wide world of color possibilities opens up for you. Whether you’re striving for vibrancy not attainable in process colors, or looking to add some pizzazz to your printed piece, it may be time to consider incorporating some custom printing finishes to add that little something extra—think spot colors, embossing, foil stamping, spot varnish, and of course, metallic inks.

What is a metallic ink?

Metallic ink has reflective metal particles such as copper, bronze, zinc or aluminum suspended within it. When the ink dries, the metal particles reflect light and create a metallic sheen. Metallic inks add color and shine beyond what regular inks can produce, but are less shiny and reflective than the more complicated and expensive foil stamping. They are available in a variety of both pure metallic colors such as gold, silver, bronze, blue and red, and combination tints.

Metal Madness – A Lustrous Add-on

Metallic inks are special inks that create a shine and luster you won’t see in standard inks. Silver and gold metallics are the most common, but metallic inks also come in bright blues, vibrant purples, hot reds and burnished coppers. Metallic inks are perfect for presenting that high-end image because they add attention-grabbing shine to any printed piece without the higher cost of foil stamping. There are a variety of different ways you can incorporate metallic inks into your organization’s print materials. Consider the following ideas:

  • Highlight headlines or important points on postcards, brochures, and flyers
  • Add some elegance to invitations or stationery with gold or silver metallic ink
  • Add some pizzazz to your company name or logo
  • Create an unforgettable business card with subtle metallic highlights
  • Use several different metallic inks together to create a unique image or design
  • Make special elements or lettering on your presentation folders pop

Get it Right: Things to Consider When Using Metallic Inks

If you are thinking of using metallic ink on your next offset printing project, there are a few things you should consider to ensure you get the best possible results.

  1. Do your homework – Not every printer has experience with metallic inks. Before you award a metallic job to a printer, ask to see samples of various metallic projects the shop has produced in the past.
  2. Be forward – Show your design to the printer early in the process. If either of you are concerned about how the metallic colors will read, it may be worth negotiating a small press proof—the gold standard insurance policy for getting the look you want.
  3. Coated is key – If you are aiming for maximum shine, print on a coated stock—the glossier the better. Coated stocks have more ink holdout, which means that less of the ink is absorbed into the paper fibers. It sits atop the paper instead, where it can work up some serious shine.
  4. Protect your piece – Since they’re composed of metal flakes, metallics are somewhat prone to chalking and flaking.

Metallic inks not only look nice, they will also help take your marketing materials to the next level by defying the status quo. Oftentimes, the spotlight of attention is on the layout and colors of the piece and the use of ink sometimes gets neglected. If you incorporate metallic inks, you create a shiny and glossy effect that will make your full color postcard, business card, catalog or brochure stand out from the pack.

Choosing a Printing Service for Your Project

Choosing a Printing Service for Your Project

As one of our oldest industries, there are scores of “printing” choices, but what are the differences in printing services and methods, and which is right for your project? There are three key factors that will help you determine what type of printing service is right for you and your budget: Quantity, quality and production speed. Here’s a rundown on the types of printing services and their relative pros and cons.

Standard Business Printing Services and Methods

Desktop Printing

Desktop printingNeed to run only a couple dozen copies of a flyer, a few manuals or one-at-a-time invoices? A desktop printer fits the bill. Whether laser or inkjet (using toner as opposed to ink), printers you have in your home or office produce instant copies with acceptable quality when using good paper. Once your quantity requirements increase, however, your actual ink and paper cost can get expensive as a do-it-yourselfer. To minimize your per-piece cost, or if you want higher quality, special printing effects or promotional printing on substrates other than paper, you’ll need to find a printing service for your project.

Digital Printing

Digital Printing PressA digital file is sent from a computer directly to a toner-based digital press or copier. Because there are minimal set up costs, digital printing services are most cost effective for low run printing, such as 100 flyers or postcards, a few posters, or for creating complex document compilations such as training manuals. Short turnaround times are another reason to use digital printing when speed is critical. Digital printing quality doesn’t quite offer that “professional” look you get with traditional commercial offset lithography printing, but as equipment improves, it’s getting closer.

Special, high-end digital printers are used for large format printing, such as for large posters and vinyl banners.

Offset Lithography

Offset Printing PressIt is the most widely used printing service. Offset printing is where ink is transferred, or offset, from metal plates to a rubber cylinder or “blanket”, then onto the paper. This printing method accommodates the vast majority of commercial printing needs. Print projects such as a glossy brochures, postcards, business cards, stationery and catalogs are common offset projects. The advantages are rich, accurate higher-quality color and details and lower unit cost for volume quantities (250-500 pieces or more). Offset printing can take a little longer than digital printing due to the time needed for creating plates and for the ink to dry before cutting and finishing. Offset is generally not offered in smaller quantities, due to the initial set up costs involved.

Learn more about offset printing, the type of printing we use for most products at PrintingForLess.com

Offset presses are either “sheet-fed” with individual sheets or paper or “web-fed” with rolls of paper. Sheet-fed presses are generally used for short to medium runs of standard business marketing printing, while web presses are most cost-effectivene for high-run commercial printing, usually of magazines, catalogs and books (around 20,000 quantity or more) and for newspaper printing.

Printing Services Compared

Standard Printing Type Quantity – lowest unit cost Quality Production Speed
Desktop printing Less than 50 pieces Good Immediate
Digital printing 50-250 pieces Good 1-4 days*
Offset lithography 250 or more pieces Excellent 2-6 days*

Take some time and ask yourself: What matters most to you on your print project? The size of your marketing campaign, your company’s image and quality needs, any looming deadlines and your target recipients’ expectations are important considerations to weigh when you are looking for the best printing service match for your project.

Other Printing Services

Gravure Printing

Rotogravure presses are the fastest and widest presses in operation and are mostly used for huge industrial runs of magazines and direct mail catalogs.

Engraving, Thermography, Flexography and Screen Printing

Engraving is used on fine stationery, while thermography is a lower-end process that creates an engraved or raised printing effect. Flexography is generally used on packaging, such as food labels and can be used for printing on non-paper mediums such as plastic, metallic films and cellophane. Screen printing services are used for T-shirts and billboards.
