Rip Cards or Tear Off Cards

Rip Cards or Tear Off Cards

This under-utilized marketing concept is perfect for increasing customer engagement and campaign lift. Rip cards are ideal for a number of specialized, printed marketing materials.

Examples include:

  • Appointment Cards
  • Event Tickets
  • Raffle Tickets
  • Membership Cards
  • R.S.V.P. Invitations
  • Real Estate Featured Properties
  • Postcards with Coupon Mailings
  • Save the Date Announcements
  • Upgraded Business Cards
  • Door Hangers Offers
  • Multiple Coupon Offers
  • Special Promotions

rip card printing examplesThese 2-in-1, promotional postcards serve dual purposes. They give you more advertising space and allow you to attach a removable tab that can house a business or discount card.

A postcard with perforation allows fun, interactive customizing of your marketing campaign. We specialize in doing the difficult. One unique perforated postcard project is highlighted on our Blog. Custom printing is our specialty. Don’t be afraid to call and talk to a printing expert to help you get the finished product you want.

Be creative with your custom rip card design. A variety of finishes, sizes and card stocks are available. Unique design can make the concept memorable as well. For example; a weight loss clinic could make a layout with a person’s stomach over the perforation. When the tear off is removed, it “slims” the overweight image. The card could read, “We Are Here To Help You Remove Those Extra Pounds: Tear off this card for 25% off your personalized weight loss program.”

Many real estate professionals make use of rip cards. The main portion of the card is a highlight of one or two listings. Images and listing specifics are housed on this portion of the card. The tear off piece is the agent’s business card. Insurance agents are another ideal candidate for rip cards. The insurance ad, with rates or benefits, is the primary portion of the card. The remaining area is a tear off business card.

Creative professionals, musicians, charitable organizations, and special event companies often incorporate perforated post cards to promote both their brand and a specific event, product, or service. In this case, the ticket, or event stub, is the smaller portion of the card. A branding advertisement is then placed on the larger portion which the customer keeps.

Rip cards are affordable.

We are ready to work with you to produce a rip card that fits your exact requirements.
Call 800-930-2423 for a rip card price quote, or use the form below.

Paper Folding

Paper Folding Options for Commercial Printing

paper folding type chartMost of the marketing materials that we print fall into what can be called the ‘standard’ fold types. Some of the standard paper folds that we do every day include the:

  • Half fold
  • Tri fold
  • Gate fold – open
  • Gate fold – closed
  • Z folds
  • Parallel fold
  • Accordion fold
  • Quarter fold
  • Half/Tri fold
  • Tri/Half fold

See images to the right to better understand the names of the folds. Or, see paper folding in action in the video below.

Custom Folds

While most of the marketing materials you see fall in the common ‘standard’ paper fold category, the possibilities really are endless – you’re only limited by your imagination. Paper can be scored and folded into some pretty crazy shapes and sizes. Plus, creative folding can be a great way to stand out from the crowd with your next marketing piece.

A wonderful source for ideas on creative folding is Trish Witkowski – the self-proclaimed “Folding Fanatic”. Check out her website at www.foldfactory.com. She provides several examples of creative folds, including the ones listed below:

Carrier Combo
This fold is a combination of one folding style nesting into another. There is some flexibility here in choice of folding style, but the overall concept is that the “carrier” piece has an outside or inside inverted short fold – basically a short fold that folds up from the bottom, visible from either the inside or the outside of the piece. The short fold creates a “pocket” that can hold an additional nested piece (folding style optional). The end result is innovative and truly impactful.

Stepped Double Parallel
The stepped double parallel fold type is a fun modification on an old standard – the double parallel fold. The concept is simple – by shortening the cover and adjusting the lengths of the trailing panels, you can create a “tabbed” effect along one side. It’s a fairly easy layout adjustment that will offer a lot of mileage from a creative standpoint.

Wrapped Stepped Accordion with Short Cover
Another great accordion folding option (budget beware) is a wrapped stepped accordion with short cover. This is an innovative way to close one edge on the challenging stepped accordion fold, while maintaining the “tabbed” appearance that is so appealing. The short cover is optional – you could always make it flush if you needed to close the right edge, too, but the short cover really showcases the stepped panels.

Asymmetrical Accordion
Imagine this: an accordion fold where some panels are shorter (in pairs), creating an interesting and varied zigzag profile while maintaining a flush appearance when folded. This is very exciting for promotional pieces or other special projects.

Tapered Roll Fold
Have fun with diecuts! Take the standard roll fold and apply a creative, tapering diecut to the roll-in panels and see what you end up with. The panels overlap and layer to create a wonderful visual texture. Whether the shape is simple and geometric, or varied and organic, this style has a lot of character.

The paper you choose for your folded print piece is by far the most important factor in the folding process. Paper choice is not only for looking good, but also for functionality. A bad paper choice on a folded piece can have very disappointing results.

For example, a large-sized brochure printed on thin paper will be droopy; a big, folded poster printed on card-stock will be wrinkled and won’t lay flat. Give some consideration to paper choice – ask your printer for advice if you have questions about the best paper for your folded piece. It’s essential to understand the characteristics of paper before you can understand how it will perform in the folding process.

From a manufacturing perspective, folding paper can get a little tricky. Thanks to our veteran manufacturing employees here at Printing for Less, you can rest assured that things like paper type, how the paper was milled, the fibers in the paper, and the grain of the fibers in the paper are all considered when your print piece is folded.

We don’t put up with bad printing folds! You can trust that the edges of your piece won’t crack or tear, and your folds will be crisp and clean – your folded paper project will look like a million bucks!

2 Color Printing – Two Colors are Better than One

2 Color Printing – Two Colors are Better than One

In 2 color printing, two ink colors are used instead of one on lower end marketing materials, vs four on higher-end commercially printed pieces. The inks used are typically Pantone® colors, and are frequently used to print a logo, design or symbol in a unique color. Pantone inks are the industry standard in two-color printing because they are part of a standardized color matching system to help different manufacturers in different locations or industries reproduce the exact same color by referring to the Pantone Matching System Color Guides.

Adding a second color to black and white printing will add color and impact and can improve the professionalism and increase the response on marketing materials. A unique, readily identifiable spot color is sometimes used by companies to create a brand color that is used on all their marketing and product materials.

Advantages to 2 Color Printing

  • Having a specific reproducible color for brand identification, especially if you print multiple items across different vendors or product types.
  • Spot colors can be printed more consistently than a CMYK (four color process) color build across multiple pages of a multipage catalog, or across multiple printed pieces or even product types. If you need a standard logo color on a brochure, a plastic credit card or something like a metal product, a spot color can more easily be matched on all of them. If you are printing a piece that has a large, heavy saturated area of ink or a solid block of color that is used on every page in a booklet or catalog, using a spot color helps to ensure that the color is consistent throughout the piece.
  • A PMS or spot colors is necessary for certain colors such as navy blue, bright orange or metallic colors that are impossible to produce using CMYK inks.
  • In some cases, especially for higher quantities, it’s less expensive to use 2 color printing than 4 color process printing.

Disadvantages to 2 Color Printing

  • In most cases, two color printing is more expensive than full color CMYK, unless the size of the piece or quantity is fairly large.
  • You can’t have full color photos or a variety of different colored elements on a project printed with just two colors.
  • Unless one of the colors used is black or a dark color, text readability might not be optimal.
  • You end up with a less professional looking product that might negatively impact the marketing potential of the piece.

Pantone CMYK Conversion

Make sure that your printing company doesn’t convert your specific Pantone request to a CMYK color build and print it as four color without telling you. This has been known to occur and should be something you confirm when selecting your printing company. Make sure they will use true two color printing on your project if requested, and not a CMYK conversion.

Other Options for 2 Color

If a particular PMS color is really needed for branding or design purposes, one common practice is to use regular four color process printing and add one or two spot colors. This allows you to print rich, accurate photos as well as making sure that your spot color or Pantone color requirements are met. Five or six color printed pieces are fairly common, especially for high end marketing materials.

Tips to get started with your Two Color Printing Project:

  • Give us a call and let us walk you through the process. We can even send you Pantone® swatches to help you make your color decision.
  • If you are printing a combination of coated and uncoated paper (for example, brochures and letterhead), remember that ink colors may not match exactly across the different paper types. It’s the same ink, but they don’t always look the same on different paper types, typically looking duller on uncoated paper stocks.
  • If an exact color match is critical, ask for a “press proof” of your job. This will give you an idea of how the final colors will look on paper as opposed to your monitor.

Scented Printing

Scented Printing

scented inks for printing

Did you know that smell is the sense most closely linked to memory? Scented ink is not only memorable, it is a creative way to add some pizzazz to your printed materials. We offer scratch-n-sniff and coated light-rub. We can also work with specialty glue, which is often used in magazine inserts that hold perfume samples. Choose from these standard scents or combinations.

We offer a wide range of standard scents, highlighted by categories such as:

  • Foods like Apple Pie, Bacon, Coffee and Chocolate
  • Spices such as Basil, Ginger and Peppermint
  • Fruits and Vegetables from Banana and Grapefruit to Passionfruit and Tangerine
  • Flowers and Plants like Daffodil, Geranium, Lilac and Orange Blossom
  • A variety of others like Suntan Oil, Menthol, Campfire and Gasoline

There are too many to list here, with new scents arriving often. If you’ve go an idea to inject some aroma into your marketing, give us a call and we’ll help find the perfect solution for your brand and your budget.

*Custom scents available. This option is best suited for large quantities. Our knowledgeable customer advocates can help you in determining if this special effect is right for your project timeline and budget.

Wacky and Stinky:

Engage your customers in a new way with creative use of scented inks or glues. For example, a car dealership that is investing in a direct mail campaign would increase the effectiveness by adding a “new car scent” on the mailer. It entices the customer to imagine getting into a new car. Or a bakery that is promoting their chocolate chip cookies can send a scratch-n-sniff cookie image that invites customers to come in for the real thing.

Scented Printing F.A.Q.:

Can I mail a piece with scented ink? Absolutely. The USPS has approved the mailing of scented surfaces. The only stipulation is that the scent cannot be exposed during delivery. Any postcard or direct mail must have a cover on the scent or the piece can be designed with a fold to meet this requirement.

How long will the scent last? Once the scented ink is printed, it will be lightly sealed with a thin coating. Until it is slightly rubbed, that scent can last for years. If you need a large quantity, you can rest assured the scent will be strong.

Can I use more than one scent at a time? You bet. We can incorporate any combination you need.

Do I have to use a specialty paper to print with scented inks? No. You can choose from our selection of premium, recycled, or standard papers. We will coat the paper to hold the scented ink.

Can I expect the same quality of printing, or will the scented ink look cheap? We are not about to let quality slip. You can count on Printing for Less to deliver the same industry-leading quality and service. The scented ink portion will look every bit as amazing as the entire piece.
If you can dream it, your customers can smell it. Our friendly print experts are ready to talk to you about the possibilities at 800-930-6040.

Newsletter Design Idea Example

Newsletter Design Idea Example

The Art of a Newsletter

Creating a newsletter and keeping people informed is important, especially when it comes to non-profit organizations. A newsletter can provide helpful information, announce upcoming events and activities and provide a recap of what was accomplished since the prior newsletter. Distributing your newsletter by direct mail is a great way to get your message out, remind people about your company with something tangible, and keep them informed every step of the way.

Target

FACT or Fine Arts for Children & Teens, is a non-profit program that emphasizes bringing arts-learning opportunities to under served children in the northern area of New Mexico. Nearly 80% of the students they serve are considered at-risk, and many come from some of northern New Mexico’s lowest-income and highest-crime neighborhoods. By working with students and teachers, FACT encourages art education that is rigorous, fun and positively influences student success.

FACT’s newsletter is designed for a wide array of people from students and parents to board members and people wanting to donate to a useful cause.

Appeal

  • Layout – The newsletter design is carefully laid out with each section highlighted in a different color. This breaks the content into easy to read sections and allows your eyes to focus on one piece at a time.
  • Informative – This newsletter example is targeted to a specific audience looking for updates on the program, upcoming events and classes and highlights from the past few months.
  • Paper – The designer chose 80# dull matte text to show the images off beautifully without being too glossy. This durable, heavy-weight paper was a great choice as it can be easily folded and mailed.

Attention Directors

  • Format – This fine example of an 11×17 quarter fold newsletter format provides the designer the ability to fill this newsletter with a wealth of information and pictures and still have room for a mailing area, turning it into an cost effective self mailer.
  • Color – By using numerous playful colors throughout the newsletter, it catches the attention and draws the reader in, ensuring this piece will be read cover to cover.

Motivators

Keeping people up to date – This sample of a successful newsletter is full of information, from upcoming activities/classes, to transition in the staff, and the organization seeking sponsorships. You can get a sense of what they accomplished in the past 6 months by reading their program highlight section and get a view of what events are coming up in the months ahead.

Summary

Newsletters are one of the most popular printed pieces and are extremely valuable when keeping people informed is a top priority. FACT did a fantastic job with the newsletter layout and provided essential and interesting information for their students, parents, staff and sponsors. Create your newsletter today by clicking here for a newsletter template.

Picture this. Your prospect arrives home and gets out of the car. She checks the mail and absentmindedly rifles through a stack of uninviting junk mail. Then she goes to the front door, and slowly starts to turn the handle. But wait…something stops her in her tracks. Hanging on the door is the full color, professional-quality, eye-catching door hanger your company has strategically placed on the knob.

Sounds like a marketer’s dream, right? Door hangers are full of untapped marketing potential. They are the perfect vehicle for marketing your business locally and are one of the most inexpensive ways to get the word out a large group of potential customers. Full color, professionally-printed door hangers are easy to distribute and are effective because they are the first advertisement a consumer sees when he or she arrives home.

Pack a Serious Promotional Punch with Door Hanger Marketing

Door hangers can be used in a variety of ways to market your business. Whether you are seeking new customers or trying to generate repeat business, doorknob hangers will give you some serious bang for your marketing buck. Here are a few ideas for how you can make door hangers work for you:

  • Announce a new business
  • Introduce an established business to potential customers that have recently moved into the area
  • Promote a sale
  • Distribute coupons
  • Promote an event – grand opening, giveaway, in-store promotion
  • Educate potential customers about products or services
  • Inform conference attendees about the next day’s schedule by hanging a door hanger on their hotel doors
  • Introduce a new product or service
  • Highlight a political candidate

Ready, Aim, Fire: Hitting the Mark with Full Color Door Hangers

We all know that even the best marketing campaigns are wasted without a relevant target. Ideally, your target should consist of people or businesses ready to buy your product or service at the moment they receive your door hanger. Door hangers are very effective at this because they allow you to target specific areas and demographics to help in increase your ROI.

For example, if you sell fencing, you can deliver your door hangers just to the homes without an existing fence. Or if you sell renters insurance, you can target your door hangers to specific apartment complexes. Or, if you perform snow removal, you can focus on neighboring homes that do not currently use your services – and look like they could use it!

Door Hanger Distribution – Divide and Conquer

How a business distributes their door hangers depends on the resources you have available. There are several options to getting it done:

  1. Utilize your company staff to distribute your door hangers to your target audience.
  2. Enlist friends and family to help you out and reduce your distribution costs. Try turning it into a competition to see who can distribute the most door hangers in the time allotted. It will be fun and more effective than doing it yourself!
  3. If you just can’t find the time to do it yourself, outsourcing your door hanger distribution is also a viable option for many businesses.

Consider this: An able bodied person should be able to distribute between 600 and 800 door hangers a day depending upon neighborhood concentration. Better get moving!

Door Hanger Design: Getting People to Respond

The more eye-catching and visually appealing your door hanger is, the greater the chances someone will read it, remember its message, and purchase your service or product. Consider an attention-grabbing headline and image on the front of your door hanger or design it in an unusual shape or color to stand out from the pack. Or try transforming your door hanger into a flyer, business card and coupon all in one by using perforation marks to allow future clients to neatly tear off important information. The most important thing to do when designing your door hanger is to make it easy to respond to your offer and have a clear ‘call to action.’

As you can see the, the benefits to adding door hangers to your marketing plan are numerous. Not only are doorknob hangers perfect for reaching a specific target audience, they also allow you to hit your prospect at exactly the right time and are hard to ignore. Plus, your door hanger is likely to be carried into your prospects’ home for a second look later on.
