How To Make A Super Brochure Or Mailing Piece

How To Make A Super Brochure Or Mailing Piece

By Tom Egelhoff

  1. Put your selling message on the cover.
This is the most important rule of all and, curiously, one that is little followed. The cover of a brochure works like a headline of a print ad. Four out of five people never get beyond it. If you depend on the inside pages to make a sale, you are wasting 80% of your money.
  2. Insist on a “family resemblance” with your advertising.
Develop a theme for your marketing plan and carry it throughout your ad campaign.
  3. Use a single illustration on the cover.
Research suggests that one large illustration is more effective than several small ones. Illustrations with story appeal that involve the reader add impact.
  4. Select pictures that tell a story.
The right photographs can often express your positioning better than words.
  5. Always caption photographs.
Next to the cover, captions are the best-read element of any brochure.
  6. Don’t be afraid of long copy.
If people have bothered to write or express an interest in your brochure, they are prospects for the product or service you are selling. Tell them everything they need to know.
  7. Spotlight the important facts.
Remember that one of the most frequent criticisms of brochures in general is that they “do not give enough facts.” Tell consumers what is included, what are the costs, what are the hours. Graphic devices can help to spotlight important information.
  8. Use photos instead of drawings.
Research says that photographs increase recall 26% over drawings. Photographs suggest reality in the readers mind.
  9. Make your brochure worth keeping.
Give your piece longer life, and longer selling power, by encouraging the consumer to keep it handy.
  10. Give your product a first-class ticket.
In many cases, the brochure is your product; the “salesperson” who represents you to the customer. Make it as good as your finances will allow.
  11. Ask for the order.
What action do you want the reader to take? Write, call, return a card? Every piece of literature must contain a clear call to action.

Brochure Design Tips for Business

Brochure Design Tips for Business

How to Make Your Brochures Stand Out

brochure designsPrinted brochures are a sure-fire way to promote your business and reach new customers. Brochures serve up key information about a new product or service, provide insight into your company and give customers something tangible to see, feel and take with them. Many people think of trifold brochures as the standard, but, in fact, brochures come in many different shapes and sizes, including sell sheets, product guides, flyers, menus, newsletters and spec sheets.

So why would anyone cut corners on something so important? When designing and printing brochures, consider these tips for a successful project:

Brochure Sizes

There are four standard brochure sizes: 8.5 x 11, 8.5 x 14, 11 x 17, and 11 x 25.5. Choose a size that matches the quantity of information you want to get across. People react better to clutter free designs so don’t try to crowd your information and images into too small of a space.

Consider the staying power of the brochure when choosing a size. An 11 x 25.5 large fold-out full color brochure might serve as a mini product catalog and be kept at hand for years. An 11 x 17 half-folded provides four 8.5 x 11 “pages” and works well for a complicated product description which requires numerous images, graphs and text. Both fit nicely into a presentation folder for a professional look.

Choose an 8.5 x 11 trifold or half-fold brochure for trade shows, mailers, take-out menus, event promos, or any other type of sales brochure when you don’t need the additional space.

Brochure Printing

Commercial printers offer a wide array of choices when it comes to paper and finishing for your brochures. To create “richness”, consider heavier weight paper and special effects like die-cuts or spot varnish to highlight images on the cover. If you plan to mail your brochure, it will pay to include coating. This gives the brochure a glossy finish and makes it more scuff resistant for protection as it moves through the mail stream.

Brochure Templates for Mailing

usps logoWhen creating a brochure design that will be mailed, always take into account how the piece will be mailed. Use our U.S. mail layout guides in the brochure size of your choice. These brochure templates incorporate USPS specific guidelines relating to tabbing, dimensional sizes, location and size of the address panel and postage. All may affect which mail class can be used and the cost of the mailing. Our experts are here to help you with your brochure mailing projects or find additional information online with our Mailing Services Guide.

Even if you don’t plan to mail your brochure initially, you may want to plan ahead for the possibility and include a mailing panel in your design. Our full service commercial printing and mailing service can always print extra brochures and hold them for future potential mailings.

Brochures are one of the most versatile pieces in your advertising or marketing arsenal: sell sheets, product launches, flyers, menus, newsletters or spec sheets – a “brochure” can handle it all.

Half Fold 11×17 Brochure Design Review

Half Fold 11×17 Brochure Design Review

Is It a Big Brochure or a Small Catalog?

Island Grove Ag Products Brochure

Need to target a specific group or audience for you next brochure? Informative brochures are a fantastic way to educate your customers about a specific function or product. By laying out the appropriate information, your customers will feel empowered to make the right choice. Island Grove Ag Products took full advantage of advertising their blueberries by providing an informative brochure to their audience. The large 11×17 half fold format serves as a small catalog of their products. By allowing their customers to read and compare the different varieties of blueberries, they can make an educated decision when choosing which berry will work best for them.

Target

Island Grove Ag Products is a blueberry farms in north central Florida who partnered with the University of Florida breeding program to grow their farm. Once they joined with the University of Florida, Island Grove Ag Products was able to expand production with experimental and new released varieties that could be tested under realistic growing conditions. The farm quickly grew and currently has 310 acres of producing fields and a nursery for native plants.

Appeal

Island Grove’s customers are put at ease with this brochure once they open it and see the mission statement and the message of “let us help you succeed”. Both these statements reassure the customer that Island Grove wants them to succeed in growing blueberries and will help them out every step of the way.
  • Product Image – Close up images of blueberries throughout the brochure allows you to see the quality of the berries in great detail.
  • Informative – This brochure is targeted to a specific audience looking for information on blueberries. The detailed “chill hour map” of Florida helps the reader determine which blueberries will work best for their location and growing conditions. Island Grove extended the shelf life of this brochure by providing general information that will not change in the future.
  • Paper – The designer chose 80# Gloss Cover to show the color-rich images off beautifully. This durable, heavy-weight paper was a great choice for this brochure since many will hold on to it as a reference guide.

Attention Directors

The designers used several techniques to display the food in this brochure.
  • Format – The 11×17″ half fold brochure allows the designer to provide the history of Island Grove and list all the blueberry varieties on the other side of the brochure without overcrowding the brochure details or layout. The chart is valuable for the reader to compare quality and “chill hours”.
  • Color – The use of vibrant colors on the front cover of the brochure draws the reader in, ensuring this piece will be read and reviewed.

Motivators

The contact information is displayed twice in this brochure. The website is placed inside the brochure at the bottom of the variety of blueberries inviting the potential customer to visit the site to get more information, such as price. The back page of the brochure was put to good use with more images of berries, contact information and a map making it easy for anyone to contact or visit them.

Summary

The colors on the cover are extremely eye-catching and entice the reader to open this half-fold brochure. With information inside to help educate the reader, they are sure to hold on to this piece as a reference guide when choosing the type of blueberries to plant now and in the future.

The different panels of the 11 x 17 brochure are used effectively.

Pantone Colors in Printing

Printing with Pantone Colors and Spot Color Inks

Color creates the first impression of any print. Even the lack of color can be a bold statement. Because of that, you should put thought into how you want colors to impact your brand through print.

The biggest choice you will need to make when it comes to ink is whether to use spot colors (Pantone Matching System®) or CMYK process printing. Understanding the difference between the two “color systems” and when you should use each is the key to making it an easy choice.

What is a Pantone (PMS) color?

A PMS color is a specific numbered color in the Pantone Matching System® used in the graphic arts, printing and other industries to facilitate accurate and consistent color reproduction, especially across multiple production runs, vendors and manufacturing processes.

CMYK vs Pantone: Printing Processes Demystified

When preparing an image for printing in CMYK, the electronic file is separated into four primary colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The image is recreated using screen tints made up of small dots that are applied at different angles to the four process colors. The separated color images are then transferred to four different printing plates on the press. The colors are then printed one after the other to recreate the original image. The CMYK colors are manufactured colors and are not mixed by the end user. This method can be referred to as 4 color, full-color or standard process printing.

Pantone Colors in Printing
CMYK or cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks used in process printing

The PMS system uses pre-determined, published color formulas to create a large number of ink colors. PMS stands for Pantone Matching System®, and is a standardized color reproduction system. Similar to the paint swatch guides you find at your favorite paint store, the pantone color chart contains thousands of color swatches created from a palette of basic colors. Each color has a ‘PMS’ number assigned to it. These numbers are used to identify the exact color needed. Using PMS inks is called spot color printing.

A selection of colors from the Pantone color chart

Get it Right: Benefits and Drawbacks of Printing with Pantone

Color is very subjective, which is why the Pantone Matching System® works so well. It takes all the guesswork out of color identification. Every computer monitor is different, every printer is different. By standardizing the colors, manufacturers and customers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match. It is used by many printers and graphic artists to deliver reliable, reproducible colors to their customers. The ink manufacturers who create the base color inks are strictly licensed by Pantone for color accuracy.

Why PMS Isn’t Always King

Even though Pantone is a great option in certain cases, it doesn’t always make sense to incorporate it into your printing project. Using spot colors is usually more expensive than process inks due to the extra production costs involved in “washing up” and changing out the ink in the press, particularly when using more than one or two PMS colors depending on the printer’s manufacturing equipment and processes. Since CMYK process printing uses the same base colors all the time, it’s a more cost-effective solution.

When Spot Colors Should Reign Supreme

There are certain times in commercial printing when your colors need to be exact. That’s when you should consider using Pantone colors, either on their own or added to standard four-color process printing. Here are a few examples:

  1. Consistent Branding/Logos – Think McDonald’s red or UPS brown. Using PMS colors for your logo and stationery will allow you to ensure color accuracy and establish a standard that anyone working with your artwork will be able to match.
  2. Colors outside the range of CMYK – There are some colors that just can’t be produced with CMYK, including colors such as reflex blue, fluorescent orange or metallic silver.
