Missing Fonts in Adobe Applications

We began a discussion of fonts for printing with this blog posting, where we talked about the different kinds of fonts that can be used for printing.

Most experienced creative professionals would probably agree that working with fonts could be one of the most problematic issues in working with graphics applications. There are a couple reasons for this:

• It’s common to have multiple fonts with similar names, which can get mixed up or be open simultaneously. If you choose the wrong font, type can reflow, or an incorrect character can appear.

• Until the advent of OpenType fonts, the file formats and character sets of Macintosh and Windows fonts differed. This would cause problems if you wanted to share your file with someone working on the other platform.

When fonts are discovered to be missing when an Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator is opening, you’ll get a dialog (this is the one from Adobe InDesign).

You are given the opportunity to open the correct font on your computer and the problem will be resolved. If you’re not sure what font is missing, both InDesign and Illustrator have Find Font dialog boxes that give you more information and let you choose a substitute font.

Adobe InDesign gives you the best information. It tells you what type of font is missing. If you click the More Info button (bottom right in the dialog), you can get more information about the font. If you use the Find First, Change, Change All and Change/Find buttons you can either observe the missing font and/or replace it.

InDesign also highlight,ts missing fonts by showing them with a pink background to make it easier to see where they are in your text.

Customer Showcase: IFAW posters — Elephants or cats

Printing for Less customer, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), recently printed a pair of 11 x 17″ posters highlighting two very different animals for their organization and cause, which provides a wide level of appeal — elephants or cats (take your pick!).
Additionally, by using the 11 x17″ size, which also works well as a brochure in its folded form, it allowed them to use a product that was both functional and cost-effective.

Check out the two versions here, and pick your favorite:

Twisted Stitches – It’s a magnet, it’s a t-shirt, it’s a business card…

Twisted Stitches out of Portland, Oregon, created a very cool fridge magnet, that really captures exactly what they do: screen printing and embroidery, of–you guessed it, shirts.

This would have worked as a standard square or business card-sized piece, but they got creative, and made a perfect little shirt out of the magnet.

Customer Showcase: PSGDesign’s “clear” business card

Business cards are an ever-present,  required piece of paper every business person should own. Who doesn’t have one?

But to really stand out from the sea of cards cluttering desks, wallets and drawers everywhere, that vital piece of informative paper stock doesn’t even need to be paper. What if you had a “clear” business card? Sounds kind of like an invisible plane…but, check out what Peter W. Sears of PSGDesign created for Steel Fab Erecting.

This card combines the iconic skyline of New York City with steel girders, giving it the illusion of depth and and a horizon. A very unique way to stand out with something as common as a business card. Want to find out more, or get something like this printed for your own company?

Printing for Less Customer Project Showcase: Test Monki static

Test Monki, one of Printing for Less‘s customers, created a cool “window static” for Opinion Jungle, a review and recommendation site for businesses.

The piece at first glance resembles a coaster, but when peeled back, reveals a double-sided window static, perfect for doors and windows of businesses, cars and anywhere else it would need to be seen by the masses.

In addition to the cool look and color, they also incorporated a QR code (Quick Response) for instant smart phone scanning, providing even more information. Cool indeed.
