When you consider the stress and anxiety that comes from adjusting to a disability, you may not think of riding horses under mountain vistas. We’re going to change that. Since 1993 The Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association (JHTRA) has been helping individuals with disabilities grow in confidence while benefitting from the stress reduction that therapeutic riding provides. It’s all about unconditional acceptance. The value that healing with horses brings to those with physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities is immeasurable.
JHTRA remains true to their mission, “To promote healing with horses through equine-assisted therapeutic and educational activities for people of all ages with disabilities, regardless of economic status.” A charitable organization, they rely upon financial donations and an army of caring volunteers to see this mission fulfilled.
If you’ve ever taken a ride on a horse that you connected with, you understand that sense of wholeness which comes from such a special bond. At JHTRA, they focus on this unique bond between a horse and it’s rider to achieve the goals of each student. They are a premier accredited center with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.
This labor of love was founded by DeDe McDonald (physical therapist), Elaine Infanger (parent) and Robin Lightner (horsewoman). The organization serves people with disabilities from all walks of life. They reach out to veterans who suffer from PTSD, physical disabilities, and other personal challenges. This past June they hosted a Veteran’s Ride and got to enjoy the company of some of our nation’s best. This quote is in the Newsletter PFL recently printed for them.
“This year JHTRA had the privilege of
riding with seventeen disabled enlisted
soldiers and veterans. We enjoy giving
them this opportunity to ride on the trails
under the Tetons. This fall, while taking
in the perfect weather and Teton scenery,
one of the veterans said, “Don’t ever take
that view for granted.” That’s pretty powerful coming
from someone who just returned from Afghanistan.”
The work that the JHTRA is doing is improving our world, impacting disabled individuals and those that love them every day. We support them in their endeavor and wish them all the best. To learn more about JHTRA, follow this link.
