With Halloween's scary-faced pumpkins a distant memory and Thanksgiving's turkey and mashed potatoes so close we can almost taste them, there's no denying that the end of 2009 is coming quickly. As friends and family members, this usually means a frenzy of shopping, holiday cards, wrapping paper, and carol-singing. But as businesspeople, the holidays often play a different role. In fact, for some small businesses, the holiday season is a crucial make-or-break period during which they earn profits that they must live off of for the slow first months of the next year.
So how can you maximize Q4 sales and profits to help you start off 2010 with a little cash in the bank? As with any successful initiative, you've got to start out with a plan. If you are a retailer, review your inventory and stock up on the key products that your customers will be driven to during the holidays, and then discount slow sellers to clear out excess stock. Once you've identified your 'it' products, contemplate how you are going to get the word out. Consider running an integrated postcard/email campaign or sending out a limited-time coupon with your holiday cards. If social media is your thing, utilize Twitter to alert your
customers to any last-minute sales. By putting a little effort into finishing the year strong, you'll set yourself up for an even better 2010.
This month, we're introducing a sticky new product, revealing three must-haves when designing a postcard, and featuring strategies to help boost sales through the end of the year.

Strategies for Motivating Employees Through the Downturn Whether your employees are facing intimidating workloads, dwindling finances, or potential layoffs, keeping morale afloat in a tough economy isn't easy. Last month, we asked how you are keeping your employees (or yourselves) engaged during this difficult time. Here are several of your bright ideas: |
|
| |
"Try to listen to your staff when they communicate issues!"
"Nothing gives motivation more than knowing you are appreciated for what has been asked of you and feeling like your employer believes you will triumph in your endeavors."
"Small appreciation bonuses, employee newsletters to share information, giving them ownership of particular areas of the business."
